What Keeps You Up at Night?

Recently I went through a bout with insomnia.

Let me explain.

I would go to bed and sleep for a few hours.  Then I'd wake up.   I would toss and turn and toss and turn. Eventually I'd get up.

I’m pretty sure I know what caused my insomnia. Work was on my mind. I’d think about some special events happening that weekend.  My mind raced with thoughts of all that I needed to get done.

What about you?

What keeps you up at night?

The Psalms have a lot to say to those who find themselves up in the middle of the night:

I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. (Psalm 6:6)

O my God, I cry out by day but You do not answer, by night, and am not silent.(Psalm 22:2)

By day the Lord directs His love, at night His song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life. (Psalm 42:8)

O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You . . . . On my bed I remember You; I think of You through the watches of the night. (Psalm 63:1 & 6)

I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted. (Psalm 77:1-2)

O Lord, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before You. May my prayer come before You; turn Your ear to my cry. (Psalm 88:1-2)

The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. (Psalm 121:5-6)
