Road Rage: A Close Encounter

Yesterday morning I had a close encounter with road rage.

I was driving north on Ruth Street approaching the I-94 overpass.  Two cars were at an intersection.  They had stopped for a red light.  The driver of the second car got out of his vehicle and walked to the car in front of him.

At first I assumed the vehicles were together and that the second driver was asking for directions.  But then I saw the second driver take a swing at the man in the first car.  He stopped his punch just before he hit the other driver in the face.  The angry driver then turned and walked back to his car.

This all took place in the span of about 30 seconds.  I'm not sure what caused the man to pull his punch at the last second; whatever it was, I'm glad that no one got hurt.

As I drove by I encouraged the second driver to "calm down".  He responded that the driver of the first car had almost hit him.

The Bible is filled with warnings to watch our temper.

"A quick-tempered man does foolish things" (Proverbs 14:17a).

"Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city" (Proverbs 16:32).

"A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense" (Proverbs 19:11).

"A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control" (Proverbs 29:11)

"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this:  Everyone should be quick to listen, and slow to speak and slow to become angry, for anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires" (James 1:19-20).

"In your anger do not sin:  Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold" (Ephesians 4:26:27).
