Blogs > Awestruck

Have you ever been awestruck before?  Has something ever taken your breath away?

I would imagine that when Edmund Hilary stood on Mount Everest he was awestruck.  Hilary was the first man to literally stand on top of the world.

I would imagine that Neil Armstrong was awestruck when he first stepped on the moon and looked back and saw Earth silhouetted against the black expanse of space.

Every time we stop to listen to God's prophets, we encounter an awesome God.  The God of the prophets is a God who takes our breath away; or at least, He should.

This morning I'm thinking about the words of the prophet Nahum.  This morning I'm thinking about the God of this obscure Old Testament prophet.

"The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath.  The Lord takes vengeance on His foes and maintains His wrath against His enemies.  The Lord is slow to anger and great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.  His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of His feet"

Nahum goes on like this:  "Who can withstand His indignation?  Who can endure His fierce anger?  His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before Him.  The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.  He cares for those who trust in Him, but with an overwhelming flood He will make an end to Nineveh; He will pursue His foes into darkness."

We almost never stop to consider these words.  But they are not unique to Nahum.  We can find many similar statements in the other prophets.  These prophets reminds us of the awesome greatness of the living God.

The God of the prophet Nahum is Your God and mine.  The Lord God is truly an awesome God.  He is awesome in His holiness.  He is awesome in power.  He is awesomely patient and He is awesomely good.
