Lessons in Patience

Yesterday morning I had an eye exam.  I hadn't had my eyes checked since 2006, so I figured it was time.  My appointment was for 10 o'clock at an optical store in the Maplewood Mall.  When I arrived I had some paperwork to fill out.  This took perhaps five minutes.  I then waited another five or ten minutes for the optometrist to come and get me.  About twenty minutes into the exam the optometrist dilated my eyes using some drops.  I then had to wait twenty minutes for the drops to do their job.

My vision had changed slightly since my exam in 2006.  In other words, it is time for new glasses.  The salesperson who was helping me was very professional.  At several points during the process of ordering the new glasses, she had to leave the desk where we were sitting. At one point I had to wait five minutes until she came back.

By the time I left the store it was 12:15.  It was a good thing that Mondays are my day off.

Because I was still under the effects of the eye drops, my pupils were enlarged and sensitive to light.  I wanted to wait until it was safe to drive.  And given the time it was, I was getting hungry.  I headed to the food court.  I got in line at Panda Express.  There were several people ahead of me.  Just as I was about to place my order, a young couple went ahead of me.  On the one hand, I didn't want to make a big scene about it.  On the other hand, I did want to make a statement.  I told the man, "I guess you guys must be in a hurry."  To which he responded, "We were here first."  I didn't say anything in response.

Yesterday I had some good lessons in being patient. I don't know about you, but I don't always find it easy to be patient.  It probably helped me yesterday that I didn't have a lot on my calendar.

This morning I am meditating on the words of Proverbs 16:32.  "Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city."
