Down in the Dumps

Well, here we are; less than a week now from Christmas.

This is supposed to be a time of peace and good cheer.

But, what if it isn't?

Do we put on a happy face and pretend that everything is ok?

Do we secretly wish that the holidays were over?

What can God's people do when they find themselves down in the dumps?

We can begin by simply acknowledging the fact.  We don't have to pretend otherwise.

As a matter of fact, we're in good company.

Consider the sighs and groans expressed by the saints of old.

"My tears have been my food day and night"  (Psalm 42:3).

"My bones suffer mortal agony" (Psalm 42:10).

When we're  down in the dumps, it can seem like God is a million miles away.

"My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'" (Psalm 42:3)

"My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'" (Psalm 42:10)

If we are facing a blue Christmas this year, we can simply be honest with ourselves.  You can't make yourself joyful.  But, you can still pray.

If we are down in the dumps right now, we can make the prayer of the saints of old our own.

"Why are downcast, O my soul?  Why so disturbed within me?  Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God" (Psalm 42:5 and Psalm 42:11)
